Wisdom teeth are the third molars, which usually come through between the ages of 17 and 25. Wisdom teeth can be removed by a dentist or an oral surgeon. To prevent future problems, some dentists and oral surgeons recommend removing impacted wisdom teeth even if they aren’t currently causing problems.
At Elation Dental, we can treat any immediate pain, which often needs antibiotics and sometimes pain relief. A dental X-ray will show us exactly what is happening with your wisdom teeth. We can remove many wisdom teeth in the clinic. However, some more complex cases (including those needing surgery in hospital) will be referred to a local oral surgeon.
Removing wisdom teeth without going to hospital: what are the steps at Elation Dental?
Wisdom tooth removal starts with numbing the area around the tooth with local anaesthetic. The dentist may then make a small cut in the gum and remove anything blocking access to the tooth root. The dentist then gently separates the tissue connecting the tooth to the bone and removes the tooth. Afterwards, the site is cleaned of any debris from the tooth or bone. Finally, the wound is stitched if necessary.
Healing and recovery after wisdom tooth removal
Aftercare for wisdom tooth removal includes taking over-the-counter pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. Some swelling or bleeding may occur for a few days afterwards. We will give you instructions on how to care for your mouth after surgery.
