Implant overdentures
An overdenture is a removable denture that clips onto dental implants, instead of resting only on your gums. You still take it out to clean it, but it stays firmly in place while you eat, speak and smile.
Two or more implants are placed in the jaw, and small attachments on the implants clip into the underside of your denture. Implant overdentures are especially helpful for lower dentures, which often move around because there is less gum area for them to grip. You may be able to have your existing denture converted into an overdenture, depending on its condition and fit.
Overdentures are a team effort. Our dentists assess your jaw and plan and place the dental implants, and Jeremy designs and makes the denture and connects it to the attachments. We will explain each step, the time frame and the full cost before you start.
Compared with a standard denture, an overdenture can:
- Feel more secure, with less movement and rubbing
- Make it easier to chew a wider range of foods
- Reduce or remove the need for denture adhesive
- Help preserve the bone around the implants, which otherwise shrinks over time after teeth are lost
To keep an overdenture working well, take it out to clean it and gently brush around the implants every day. The small nylon inserts in the attachments wear with use and are usually replaced every year or so to keep the clip firm.
Your visit
- Consultation with Jeremy to talk through your options and a written quote
- Impressions and bite records so your denture fits and looks right
- A try-in, so you can check the look before it is finished
- Fitting, then follow-up adjustments while you settle in
For implant overdentures, the implants are placed and allowed to heal first, then your denture is made or converted to clip onto them.
Health funds & vouchers
We accept all private health funds with HICAPS on the spot, as well as Government denture vouchers, including the Victorian Denture Scheme (VDS) and Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA).
Fees & health fundsCommon questions
Acrylic or metal: which is better?
Acrylic dentures are simpler and easier to add to later. Cobalt chrome partials are thinner, stronger and often more comfortable. Jeremy will recommend what suits your mouth and budget.
Can my broken denture be fixed quickly?
Many repairs can be done quickly. Call us on 9725 2029 and we will let you know the next available Thursday appointment.
Dentures or implants?
Dentures are usually the more affordable way to replace several teeth. Implants are fixed and do not come out. Implants can also hold a denture firmly in place. This is called an implant overdenture. We are happy to talk through all the options.
Is an overdenture the same as All-on-4?
No. An overdenture is removable, so you take it out to clean it. All-on-4 style teeth are fixed onto implants and can only be removed by your dentist. Overdentures usually need fewer implants and cost less.
